Cane

"Pilot" - Sept. 25, 2007

Lee Tergesen was in the pilot episode for a drama that starred Jimmy Smits and old friend Rita Moreno from "Oz."

The show originally was titled "Los Duques" but was changed to "Cane" -- as in sugar cane.

The show follows the lives of three generations of the Duques, a powerful Cuban-American family in South Florida who work in the rum business. Their rival is the Samuels family, a powerhouse in the sugar industry.

The pilot script indicates that the Duque clan includes three "natural" children of Pancho Duque (played by Hector Elizondo). But the ailing Duque patriarch gives Alex Vega (Jimmy Smits' character) control of Duque Enterprises. Rita Moreno plays Alex's mother.

Ken Howard plays the Samuels patriarch and Lee is his son, Lamont. His sister, Ellis Samuels, will be played by Polly Walker of "Rome" fame.

Filming of the pilot was done in Los Angeles, although the action is set in south and central Florida -- especially in the sugar cane fields around Lake Okeechobee, in western Palm Beach County.

Thirteen episodes of the show were completed and aired before the Writers Guild of America strike, and the fate of the show is unresolved. No more episodes have been ordered, but producer and star Jimmy Smits has said he'd like to continue. However, Lee's character inexplicably disappeared from the story line after the pilot episode. (Lee himself was in Africa filming "Generation Kill.")
